Hello from inside my pencil sharpener. My first gift to you are these generative pencil shavings.
I LOVE that drawing. The clear sharpener with wheels? Amazing. It's like a tiny terrarium, peeking into a world of cool shapes and textures. The fact that you think about pencil sharpeners is amazing. I started making an are.na board just about pencil sharpeners and shavings.
IMO the best pencil sharpener ever is the T'GAAL Multisharpener. I'm very opinionated about this. What's so lovely about this is the modularity it has with adjusting the taper of the sharpening. It's just... so thoughtful! My preferred taper is a short tip.
Sometimes I think about these cool flower pencils that were designed with a special barrel cross-section that results in the shavings look like petals. I know you like vases, which have the most captivating profiles, but what do you think about cross-sections? From your drawing, I started thinking about not just these fancy pencil shavings, but common pencil shavings in general. Pencil shavings are so pretty! Look at that curl, those zigzagging snakey wonders.
Peek at the code here and remix it, if you feel inclined to! I want to keep working on it and add more shapes and colours, more snakiness, and possible interactivity? Sharpening interaction? It took an unsurprisingly large amount of math to get the lovely serrated profiles of the shavings, but it was fun to find the pattern! I enjoy how it turned out, and I hope you do too.
